State proposes 125 km PPP-driven roadway system to strengthen mobility, commerce, and tourism across Ganga belt districts with significant infrastructure growth over the coming four years

Patna: The government of Bihar is preparing to develop a large 125-km highway system along the Ganga river with an estimated investment of ₹5,500 crore. The extensive initiative includes development of Vishwamitra Path, Ganga-Ambika Path, Narayani Path, and the extension of JP Ganga Path Phase-2.

Authorities state the program is intended to reshape regional transport links and stimulate economic and tourism activity across the river corridor.

Three New Ganga-Corridor Routes Proposed Under PPP Framework

The Bihar State Road Development Corporation is presently selecting agencies for the survey and execution of three key highways under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework.

The planned corridors include:

Vishwamitra Path (Buxar–Ara–Maner) – 90 km

Ganga-Ambika Path (Bidupur–Dighwara) – 56 km

Narayani Path (Darihara–Dumariya Ghat, Gopalganj) – 73.51 km

These highways will be constructed with private sector participation, where toll revenue will support cost recovery.

JP Ganga Path Phase-2 Development Moving Quickly

Along with the upcoming corridors, construction of JP Ganga Path Phase-2 is advancing at a fast pace. The 35.65 km-long project will link Digha to Koilwar.

Major elements of the project include:

17.65 km at-grade four-lane roadway from Sherpur to Koilwar

18 km elevated four-lane stretch from Digha to Sherpur

Construction following the Ganga river alignment for better urban transport connectivity

Officials characterize it as a major infrastructure initiative for Patna’s expanding transportation requirements.

₹5,500 Crore Funding to Reshape Connectivity

The total investment across all projects is projected at ₹5,500 crore. Officials are targeting completion of construction within the next four years.

After completion, the network is anticipated to:

Strengthen connectivity between Patna and western Bihar

Cut travel time considerably across regions

Improve freight transportation for agriculture and commerce

Encourage religious and cultural tourism along the Ganga belt

PPP Framework to Support Infrastructure Expansion

The government intends to implement these highway developments through the PPP framework, enabling private firms to invest in construction and recover expenses via toll collection.

Authorities believe this strategy will speed up infrastructure expansion while lowering the financial pressure on the state.

Economic and Regional Benefits Anticipated

The new Ganga corridor initiatives are expected to generate substantial socio-economic advantages for Bihar, especially in districts along the Ganga and Son river zones.

Major expected outcomes include:

Quicker transportation of agricultural goods

Expansion in regional commerce and logistics

Better access to pilgrimage and heritage destinations

Stronger connectivity between districts

The extensive highway expansion planned by the Bihar government represents one of the state’s largest infrastructure initiatives in recent years. Through projects such as Vishwamitra Path, Narayani Path, and JP Ganga Path Phase-2, Bihar seeks to create a modern, high-speed roadway network along the Ganga river corridor.
