Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani (Retd) has been named the nation’s next Chief of Defence Staff, while Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan will become the next Chief of the Naval Staff.
In a major development for India’s higher defence framework, the Union government has selected Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani (Retd) as the country’s upcoming Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The decision sustains the pattern of the nation’s senior-most military role remaining with the Indian Army, while also underscoring an expanding link between the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and the top tiers of military leadership.
Lt Gen Subramani, who presently serves as the military adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat – operating directly under National Security Advisor Ajit Doval – will replace General Anil Chauhan. General Chauhan is scheduled to conclude his tenure on May 30, 2026. After taking charge, Lt Gen Subramani will additionally assume the duties of secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs (DMA).
The movement from NSCS to the CDS position reflects the trajectory followed by his predecessor. General Anil Chauhan had likewise been serving as the military adviser in Doval’s office following retirement before returning to active duty to head the tri-services. This appointment indicates that the government views India’s principal strategic concern as originating from its land frontiers and grants the army primacy in directing the country’s defence posture.
With a professional journey extending beyond four decades, Lt Gen Subramani carries extensive operational expertise into the role. Commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985, he commanded the 16 Garhwal Rifles during intense counter-insurgency missions in Assam and headed the 17 Mountain Division in the Central Sector. His profile also features the distinguished command of 2 Corps, the Indian Army’s leading strike corps on the Western Front. Before his present assignment at the NSCS, he held the posts of Vice Chief of the Army Staff and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command.
His selection arrives at a pivotal moment, when the country has not been able to sustain the timeline for integration of the Army, Navy and Air Force into unified theatre commands. He will additionally confront the challenge of armed forces modernisation, where the country has lagged even as emerging warfare technologies have surfaced during the recent conflicts in Europe and West Asia.
In a parallel senior-level reshuffle, the government has also identified the next chief of the Indian Navy. Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, currently holding the role of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, has been appointed as the next Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). He will replace Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who retires from duty on May 31, 2026. A specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has led major assets including the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and the Western Fleet.
