Union ministers are offering prayers in temples and sharing photographs on social media platforms as they relish jhalmuri to mark Modi completing 4,399 days as prime minister.
New Delhi: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) published a social media post on X on Wednesday (June 10) congratulating Narendra Modi on “becoming the longest serving democratically elected prime minister of India in consecutive terms”. This post was accompanied by an image in which the prime minister is seen smiling and receiving a bouquet from a large gathering of officials.
“Officials of the Prime Minister’s Office congratulated PM @narendramodi on becoming the longest serving democratically elected Prime Minister of India in consecutive terms. Over the last twelve years, he has provided leadership characterised by consistency, openness and an unwavering commitment to good governance, inclusive growth and national advancement,” the PMO wrote.
Union ministers visited temples to pray and shared photographs on social media platforms celebrating Modi completing 4,399 days in office.
Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who is facing intense criticism for multiple reasons, with students demanding his resignation, shared a series of celebratory posts, accompanied by photographs, news reports and video compilations.
The NEET-UG 2026 examination was annulled and rescheduled after allegations of alleged paper leaks emerged, leading to a CBI investigation. That is not all. Several students have stated that there are serious discrepancies in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE’s) online assessment and re-assessment process for Class 12 answer scripts.
A recently-formed satirical political outfit Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and the opposition Congress have been calling for Pradhan’s resignation. Other student organisations have echoed the demand. The government was compelled to transfer senior CBSE officials in light of the controversy.
But there is still no move toward accountability by the minister.
“At the Jagannath Temple in Hauz Khas, I had the sacred darshan of Lord Jagannath and prayed at His holy feet for the good health, energy, and long life of our nation’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodiji. By the blessings of Lord Jagannath, may India continue to move forward on the path of steady progress, development, and remarkable achievements under the guidance of Prime Minister ji—this is my sincere prayer. Jai Jagannath,” wrote Pradhan.
Recently inducted into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member and Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha also shared a lengthy post saying that the feat Modi achieved is “extraordinary”.
“On 10 June 2026, Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji completes 4,399 consecutive days in office, surpassing the 4,398 days of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji, to become the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in the history of our Republic,” Chadha wrote, adding, “To earn the trust of such a vast and diverse nation even once is remarkable. To earn it three times over, without interruption, is extraordinary.”
On Monday (June 8), an explosion at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant resulted in the deaths of nine workers. Chadha, a previously vocal MP, did not post any messages expressing condolences for this incident. He has remained silent on the NEET and CBSE controversy as well.
When the country is grappling with multiple challenges, including rising fuel and LPG prices as a result of the alleged economic mismanagement by the Modi government, in addition to the war in West Asia, BJP president Nitin Nabin said “a new golden chapter” has been added to India’s democratic history today.
He wrote on X: “Today, a new golden chapter has been added to India’s democratic history. The Honorable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodiji has become the longest-serving consecutively elected Prime Minister of the country. This uninterrupted service of 4,399 days is a reflection of his unmatched dedication to the nation.”
“Under the effective leadership of Prime Minister ji, the Central Government has completed 12 years dedicated to trust, development, and public welfare. This distinguished period of ‘from resolve to achievement’ has witnessed unprecedented progress in India’s development, security, economic empowerment, and global standing,” he added.
Meanwhile, as The Wire reported earlier, this “longest serving prime minister” label may actually not be accurate or is accurate only after conditions had been applied to make the Prime Minister’s tenure appear longer than Jawaharlal Nehru’s and Indira Gandhi’s.
This celebration was, in a way, spearheaded by Ram Madhav, an RSS veteran and a powerful force in the Modi government. On June 6, in a column in the Indian Express, he wrote, “On June 10, Modi would be completing 4,399 days in office uninterruptedly as prime minister overtaking Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of 4,398 days.”
Journalist, author and columnist Aakar Patel challenged the claim in his opinion article. “It is unclear how Ram Madhav arrived at this number because Nehru was in office for more than 6,000 days, from August 15, 1947 till May 27, 1964, the day he died,” Patel wrote.
Notably, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla also congratulated Modi on this purported “historic milestone”.
