Mumbai: Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated one of the state’s largest-ever food safety enforcement campaigns, focusing on milk adulteration, synthetic milk manufacturing, and irregularities throughout the dairy supply chain. Heading the crackdown is senior IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, who assumed charge as the FDA Commissioner on May 25 and promptly began stringent action against those breaching food safety norms.
The statewide campaign has uncovered illegal synthetic milk facilities, dismantled adulterated milk networks, and intensified inspections of dairies, transport operators, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers across Maharashtra.
Maharashtra FDA’s Firm Action Against Milk Adulteration
Shortly after taking office, Tukaram Mundhe directed officials to reinforce surveillance across the complete milk supply chain. The FDA launched inspections at several locations to verify adherence to the guidelines issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
According to Mundhe, milk is not simply an ordinary food item but an essential source of nutrition for millions of people, including children, mothers, patients, and elderly citizens.
“Milk is not merely a food product; it is a nutritional foundation for millions of children, mothers, patients and senior citizens. Adulterating milk amounts to playing with public health. Such practices will not be tolerated in Maharashtra,” Mundhe said.
The intensified inspections have reportedly impacted the availability of milk and paneer in certain areas, with officials stating that strict enforcement has interrupted illegal activities linked to adulteration.
Synthetic Milk Units Detected During FDA Drive
The FDA operation has revealed multiple instances of synthetic milk production and serious violations of food safety standards. Authorities have concentrated on tracing businesses engaged in manufacturing fake or chemically modified milk products that present health risks to consumers.
The enforcement campaign covers every stage of the dairy chain, including:
Milk producers and dairies
Transportation networks
Distribution centres
Wholesale markets
Retail outlets
The FDA has cautioned that firm action will continue against businesses that do not maintain the required hygiene and quality standards.
K Rustom & Co. License Suspended Over Food Safety Violations
The enforcement campaign has also affected prominent food establishments. Mumbai’s well-known ice cream parlour K Rustom & Co. faced action after an FDA inspection identified violations concerning hygiene standards and milk fat compliance.
Following the inspection, the FDA suspended the establishment’s license.
Mundhe stated that action would continue against all businesses failing to comply with FSSAI regulations and urged citizens to remain informed about food safety standards.
Anti-Gutkha Campaign Expanded Across Maharashtra
Apart from the dairy sector, Tukaram Mundhe has also initiated a major campaign against gutkha, a prohibited chewable tobacco product in Maharashtra.
As part of this campaign, the FDA carried out raids at nearly 904 locations across the state to identify illegal storage, sale, and distribution networks.
The action reflects the FDA’s broader emphasis on public health concerns beyond milk adulteration.
Political Reactions Over FDA Enforcement Campaign
The strict enforcement campaign has drawn both support and appeals for a balanced approach.
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam welcomed the FDA’s emphasis on food hygiene but suggested that businesses should be given reasonable time to improve compliance.
He said that while maintaining food safety standards is essential, licensed establishments should receive an opportunity to rectify violations and comply with FSSAI rules.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised about whether similar levels of monitoring were undertaken during the tenure of previous FDA commissioners. Mundhe declined to comment on comparisons with earlier administrations and said:
